Reflection
How did you feel about the novel? What did you like and dislike about it? Would you recommend I teach this book in the future?
Overall the book was great. I really liked that Mark Bowden put in the american prespective and the somalia prespective, it added an extra touch to the book. The amout of information and detail in the book was also good. I think the book did a great job of explianing the situation in Samolia in the early 1990's and would recommend that you teach teach the book in the future.
As Jason said, I thought it was great how Mark Bowden incorporated the Somali perspective into the book. It can be hard writing a book, and it must have been really hard to write a book with the timeframe of 24 hours! Hats off to Mark, he really had me on the edge of my seat at parts. I reccomend this book to anyone who loves an action book OR movie!!
I liked the book a lot. And that dosent happen often. I loved how it showed both prespectives and how it showed every angle of the fight. I also think that the auther did a great job of keeping it factual and suspensfull. I definetly recomend this book again!
both perspectives are portrayed in this book which makes this book much more interesting and it gives a very good description of what war is really like. it is not just shooting and winning. you have to use your head and not be stupid. yes i believe that you should teach this book to your students in the future. it is a great book and way more entertaining than <_url> things fall apart
I agree with the other readers, the two different perspectives was a very good way to write the book. This way not only were you able to know what the Americans were thinking and doing, but also what the Somalias were thinking. For the book to be so descriptive and long is unbelievable, considering the book events in the book all happend in one single day. The author clearly did alot of reading and research to beable to write that much about this fight.
I enjoyed the action and visualization that the book provides. I also appreciated the different points of view to limit bias. However, the book was quite colossal.
This was a good book.Showing the Somalis side along with the Americans was a smart way to show thats its not always about what we hear the news.Im not sure if anyone agrees with that, but what Im saying is during the news for anything we only see our side of things, the Americans view and nothing else.Yes I believe you should teach this book in future classes, even though there were people whining about how boring and long it was, this was a good book. Also it relating to a closer time period, rather than WWII this wasn't that long ago.
Well at first i didn't really like the book but then it got really interesting. I really got into the book and it was really sad. I really like how they put the american prespective and the somalia prespective, it made the book extra good. And yes i think you should deffinately teach this book to future classes.
I thought that this was a superb book that i couldn't stop reading. Every time a "Skinny" got shot i was like "Go Rangers!" and it really showed how awesome the U.S. military is, and how we never leave a man behind.
The book was pretty good overall it really shows in good detail the true horrors of war. The book is even better than the movie. I would definetly recommend that you use this book to teach about Somalia in the future.
At first I was having a hard time following and I kept falling behind and getting lost, but once I sat down and took time to read it, it got really interesting. I liked how he showed all the different points of view. I think you should continue to teach it, but maybe have more class room discussions to make sure everyone is on the same page and understanding whats happening.
I thought that this was a very good book and I felt like I learned a lot from it. Like everyone else I also thought that the Somolian perspective was great in trying to shed light on what really happened in Mog. I would recommend that this book be tought in the future and like Zach said, I also think that you should keep showing the movie as well.
I thought the book was really good. It showed the battle from many perspectives. Yet sometimes it got confusing. The book itself was very monotinous. it was hard sometimes to stay focused on it. The story might have been more interesting if there was more about the conflict in Somalia.
I like the novel a lot...it was really great and interesting. The one big thing I hated was that there was to much to read each night, but it was real good. I would reccomend this book to lots of other people....It's great everyone!
This book was very interesting to read; it had tons of details, which were disgusting to read at times. But thats what made this book so good. I liked the fact that it had both perspectives and I strongly recommend that you teach this book in the future.
The novel was hard read for me. Many times it seemed to go pages without anything really happening. I would not recommend you teaching it to any future classes. It was nice how the Somali prospective was in the book, but I just didn't really get into it. At parts it seemed boring and I got distracted easily.
I genuinely believe that this may possibly be the least enjoyable novel I have ever read in my life. Beginning at page one, and continuing through the remainder of the book, my interest was dead. The slaughtering of Somalians and exchange of bullets became quite monotonous after page 50, and the number of characters was far too excessive to remember any decent amount of them. Please, for the sake of your students, immediately remove this book from your lesson plan, and never go back. Sorry to be negative, but this is my honest opinion. Stick with the movie!
For me the book was alright. Its just that it had to much detail like it didnt let u imagine what you wanted to imagine. Also it jumped alot from one persons view to another and it sometimes made it difficult to follow.
What I like about the book is that the book is very detailed and descriptive. Information in the book is more detailed and help you draw images in your head. i feel that this book has showed me how life in other countries could be so much different. Im glad I read this book.
"The slaughtering of Somalians and exchange of bullets became quite monotonous after page 50"
C'mon, we can try to pretend that people aren't dying, but war is part of civilization. I'll admit, I didn't like it when someone was shot, regardless of which side he was on, but I understand that war is real, and books like this are meant to open peoples' eyes on how the real world really is. Monotonous it might be, but people aren't going to break into a dance session or anything; in this case, war is shooting and more shooting. Mark tried his best to make this book interesting by adding all of the detail.
"and the number of characters was far too excessive to remember any decent amount of them"
Of course the book could have centered around a main character, but the reality of war is "you know their family, and they die". I am sure Mark wanted to make this book much like the real thing, so he incorporated several characters to show how one can get attached to a certain character (in my case Pilla) and the next minute they get shot in the neck and die. It sucks, but realizing that there are a ton of people dying as a result of this war is the reality.
Ian, you have to be one of the most insightful students ever. You make other students think of something they feel one way about and give them some food for thought. I was getting tired of hearing "Yadda yadda, this book was fine, yadda yadda". I have to say that I loved it when I read your post, because I really realized, "Holy $&%* there were a ton of characters in this book!" I had to post a responce to, once again, be the devil's advocate, but truely I admire your way to give people a new perspective.
In both perspectives they are portrayed in this book which makes this book much more interesting and it gives a very good description of what war is like. It's just not shooting and winning. You need to think things over before you do something that you're going to regret.I believe that they should learn about this book because maybe this would help them later in life.
Overall the book was good. At times the action was good a kept me reading, but other times I found myself getting bored with long descriptions of characters that ended up dieing 2 pages later. I think you should keep teaching the book and the movie, because it shows alot of how our country fights mondern wars.
I definitely think you should have students in the future read this book. I was not aware of this event's occurrence until I read this book. It was a nicely put together, I believe, because the way the author used the different perspectives of the Somalians and Americans. It was a great book with a nice piece of history that a lot of people do not know about, so I believe you should continue to have students read this book to spread the knowledge! But the read was kind of hard at times, so maybe we should have spent more time talking about what had happened every couple of days.
In a way I liked the book, and in a way i did'nt like it. I liked how it was full of action. It definently was not a boring book. But I did'nt like how complicated it was. There were times where it was hard to keep up with what was going on. I think you should keep teaching this book.
It kinda irritated me when id read two or three pages about a character and they would die within the next couple pages. I know i shouldn't be though because these people should have at least a few pages of their lives written down for us to read. i wouldn't want to fight for a country, be massacred on the dirt of another country and never be remembered accept by loved ones. id want everyone to see that i put my life on the line for them and and gave my life away so they may breath fresh air in THE GREATEST country on the face of the earth. Oh, and i didnt care for all the detail he put into this book mainly because i struggled to understand quite a few parts in the book. Id recommend this book for next year. its a good book to read and something in history that America shouldnt forget about.
I thought both the novel and the movie were good. I liked the amount of detail the novel had about each senerio. I also liked ending the book with the movie. I would recommend teaching this book in the future.
i love all the different point of views in the book. Lots of fighting..It was great!!!ummm anyone who like war like books with action packed thills then they should deffinatly read this book.!!!...just one thought though...dont go to somalia..lol..jk
i love all the different point of views in the book. Lots of fighting..It was great!!!ummm anyone who like war like books with action packed thills then they should deffinatly read this book.!!!...just one thought though...dont go to somalia..lol..jk
This book defiantly had the suspense on for me. Every night that I read my mom might call me in to do something, and I wouldn’t put the book down. I really liked the book and you need to keep teaching this book. It gives a great perspective on what war is like and what people will do in certain situations. Like what the Americans did when the 2nd black hawk went down. Best book I've read in awhile.
I thought the book was good. But I liked the movie better. although i did have a better understanding of the events by reading the books first then watching the movie. i would recommend you to tech this book in the future. i think that a lot of other kids would enjoy that book as much as i enjoyed the book
I really like this novel, because it gave me a good perspective of what the war was like in Mogadishu in 1993. One of the things that I disliked about the novel, was the fact that it was written in multiple perspectives, which made it kind of hard to follow. It was hard for me to understand the sequence of events, because the view would keep switching from the American soldiers perspectives, to the Somalians perspective. I did like how much background information was given on the lives of the soldiers, because it gave us (the readers) a connection with the characters in the novel. I would recommend that you teach this book in the future, because it is an excellent read, and it makes you think.
Personally this book is the best book i've ever read. I liked how the book gave us different perspectives and how both look at the war differently or look at it the same. I dont think the book really discribed all the main priorities because the book is mostly based around the mission not the operation. The operation is talked about but just brieflly. Because there is night and day missions be for this event even happened, and knowing this can give us a even better look at whats going on in mogidishu not just one whole battle. So I dont think this would be a good book to use in the future if your going try to show us what really happened in mogidishu.
In a way i liked the book, but then again i didn't. I like all the action and how descripitive it was. But there were many times where i got bored. And was easily distracted. I really enjoyed the movie though. I would deffinately keep the movie and the book as well.
At first I wasn't sure what was going on in the book, and I was getting confused with the multiple perspectives. But both the book and movie were fantastic. I would definately reccomend you teach this book in the future, so other kids can understand the situation that took place in Somalia in the early 1990's. Overall I give the book two thumbs up!!!!
surprisingly i enjoyed the book. it was hard to understand sometimes considering it was written in so many perspectives, but overall it was good. i wouldnt necessarly recommend you teaching the book again only because it was really confusing, especially for the girls. Dont get me wrong, it is good that you stretched us and made us endure that, but i think it could be done with a book that is more on everyones level.
The novel was fairly good overall because of the great detail in which the events of the war were describe from both sides. My only compliant would be that in some parts of the book like when the convey gets lost on its way to the first crash site the author seems to stall on these events for a prolonged amount of time when his point has already been made. I would recommend you teach this book in the future to show the authors unique style, and also show the movie so the students can compare the two.
Blackhawk down was overall a great book, I felt in the begging it was very hard to get in to. I think as we did with Things Fall Apart as a class we should of talked about the book more and what we read the night before it helps you see other peoples thoughts about what happened and not just yours. What I loved about the book was I think truly the different perspectives. Not only did they write from the U.S side but from the Somalia’s side too. It was not like every war book showing what ONLY the U.S went though and thought but Somalia’s out look too. I like the fact that it really shows how war is and what the U.S military goes though and what they do. What I disliked was how slow the book was in the begging but that’s about the only negative. I do recommend you teach this book in the future but maybe as a class talk more about it make it interesting.
I thought that the book had a great storyline, and the way that the story was told was also great. Since the Somalians had a different storyline, i thought it made the story more interesting. I would recommend that you make the rest of the students read this book in the future.
I don't think that the book shows as much emotion as the movie does. Being able to see the faces on the soldiers really helps me understand the pain and suffering they were going through. After i saw the movie, the events that i read about in the book made much more sense to me. Keep black hawk in the game plan for next year.
I enjoyed the book, but I found the movie was easier to follow. There were many times when I was reading the book that I was completely lost and confused about what was going on. The book did such a great job at talking about each soldier's lives outside of war, that when someone died, you felt the loss. I also enjoyed the detail in the battle scenes.
In the end i actually enjoyed reading this novel. At first i really didnt like it because the whole war thing really confused me. After watching the movie i had a better understanding of what actually happened. i liked how the final was a comparrison instead of questions on the book because there was way too much information and details someone could miss while reading. i recommend that you keep teaching this book in the future.
I thought this book was a great information source for the happenings in Mogadishu. I never would have known any of those events. before, I watched the movie and didn't get too much out of it, but now that I've read the book, I understand what those soldiers went through. I liked the multiple perspectives, not just the American perspective. It shows the different positions of each culture.
I feel the book was good to rea. Having different perspectives gave you great details and a good picture to see what was happening. The information in "Black Hawk" was clear. I would recomend you teach this to your classes in the future.
I think that the book was good even though the book was long. But I think that it had alot of good points to the book and it teaches us alot about the things that go on around the world. So I think that it would be a good book for you to teach in the future. An dinthink it would help everyone in the long run.
As many of the readers have stated, I also like the way Mark Bowden showed what happened in Somalia in multiple perspectives. I love this form of writing because it makes you feel that you "know all" which essentially is true. I believe this is a novel that one can get a lot from; be it new ways to write or a new and interesting topic to learn about. I think this should be kept in your future lesson plans but keep in mind that this novel was confusing and at times very hard to read. This is why i believe if you do have other classes read this book, definitely show the movie. This is a must in understanding and comprehending all that happens in the novel.
Just as everybody has said, ya the book was good. I like the action I liked how the author used different points of view. Overall it's a great book and for sure you need to keep teaching it.
All together the book was good, i got lost sometimes in the dialogue but it was a good book. I do think that you should teach this to future classes, but the movie thing would be better if we had a party with snacks and stuff while we watched.
I thought that the novel was good because it gave us an idea of what war is like, and everything that people went through when they were fighting. I thought that the multiple perspectives were good because it showed what different people went through and thought about. It was a really hard book for me to read though, it definitely isn't something that I would have read on my own, so I think it is good that we were required to read it because I learned a lot.
I enjoyed this novel was good, it is amazing on how Mark Bowden made such a great novel out of a situation that happened in 24 hours. This novel reflected on a lot of modern day societies problems, a lot of poor countries are dealing with a lot of civil wars, and drug issues within the countries. Even though this book/movie may have been looked at as a shooting killing book but all of the action in this movie/ book was for the greater good. The only thing I did not like about this book/movie was some of the graphic scenes. This is a great book I recommend you keep using this book because it actually makes reading some what interesting by all the suspense in the book.

Great Book, good life lesson.
Keep this book in your Lesson plan. You gotta give the kids who dont wanna read the reward for reading it, so keep the movie too.

I thought the book was great and I liked how the author showed both perspectives in the book I would recommend this book to teach with in the future
