Two Sides to Every Coin

One of the unique features of this book is the different points-of-view that frequently change with each chapter. Additionally, the author also provides Somali perceptions. What is the effect of our learning about events and people through the different sets of eyes?

We get to see different views for the same thing going on.For the Somali's during this time they see it as am attack on their culture and lives so they try and protect that. When seeing throught the eyes of the Americans we are trying to help ourselves by capturing two of their leaders. So in a sense we are the ones invading them, but you could also look at it as them trying to kill us so we're fighting back. Its however you want to take it.

Using several points of view really debunks a biased story. You get to see more than one side of the story. Giving the Somali perceptions also gives the reader more insight on the characters. I agree with what j.fuller13 stated, in how the reader can perceive who is invading who based on what they think. That is what makes this book great, the fact that you are not going to have a biased point of view.

The way the author uses different points of views to the story is great. It lets you see how everybody feels about the situation. The Samalis think they are being attacked for no reason but the americans see it as freeing a country from a mad man.

Hola!!
I think looking at both points of view in this book is good. It helps the reader see where the Somali's are coming from, and then also the Americans. It shows what the Somali's are planning and what the American's are planning. In ways the Somali's are the bad guys because they are hurting our peole, yet the Americans are attacking their country.

I sort of agree with Jordan.

But on the other hand, I figure, they knew this was coming.

We were trying to help them to regain some of the things they lost. Food, livelihood, the murder of their family members in search of food. It's just a big mess. We decided enough was enough. And we moved. Get over it.

As for the two sides for every coin thing. Some coins have heads on both sides. So ha.

I think this book is perdy good. I like the different points of view. They make it very interesting.

The author gives different points of views because it lets the reader know how the people being attacked feel like, and how the people attacking feel.

I think that the way the author shows different perspectives in this book is good. If we only looked at it from the American point of view, it seems like the Somalis are really bad, but if you see if from their perspective, it seems like the Americans are attacking for no reason.

Ali Amaya said...

Hearing everyone's or each character's perspective of certain situations helps the reader better understand more about each character and their personality. It also helps the reader understand the situation better because by having access to all character's thoughts gives you more to go by then just one character's thoughts and feelings.

I agree that reading through different points of view gives the reader less bias. Understanding how each side feels about the situation will allow the reader to determine which side is in the right or wrong, if either.

HELLO POPPET!!!!!!!!!!

I guess there are alot of different views on the war. While we think we are trying to help oursleves by capturing two of the somalie's people/leaders but in the perception of the somalies we are invading their country and killing their people and they dont know why. All they are trying to do is protect themselves and their family but i think all they are doing id making it harder for the Americans.

jacobroberts said...

Seeing the story through more than one persons eyes, shows how much the war effects everyone. In the Somalis eyes they fear being shot by people invading their land. The Americans, are young soldiers who "don't know why were here, but who am I to question it, I'm just doing my job." They have to do what they can to stay alive in times like these.

The author did a good job showing perceptions of the war from both sides. The americans think they are fighting to help, but the somalis are fighting the invaders being us. these point of views are great because they help the reader understand both sides of the war, which inadvertantly forces us to decide for ourselves if we were in the war for the right reason.

It's always important to look at both sides of a story. Many times people are biased and dismiss others feelings or beliefs. Like in today's controversial war people rarely think about the opposing sides point of view and ultimately it simply causes chaos.

kevin ferris said...

it makes us see different point of views

Yea i think the different points of view help the whole book go by faster cuz you dont have to read about one person over and over again. And it gives a greater understanding of the situations presented in the book.

I like how the author uses more points of views. It really gives you an overall perspective of what went on during that war. You get to see how the Somali peopole viewed the war, and you also got to see it from the eyes of the soldiers. It also gives you an unbiased point of view, because you are learning from so many different characters.

joser_cruz said...

the author gives many points of views i like that. it lets u understand the situation and it also helps you visualize more of whats really going on.

This books slow and hard to get into., hopefully it gets better.,.,

Gaige Stockwell said...

You get different thoughts and ideas of what is going on. we see it in the eyes of the soldiers and from a samali boy. it lets us view the different ideas that are out there.

Carole Yule said...

I think the different points of view is interesting and creative, but it can get hard to follow that way. I have got lost a couple times because im not sure whos talking...

Puckett said...

When we get different perspectives it makes us think a little more, and even have a little conflict about which side were on. The Americans are there because they are assigned, but the Somalis are baffled at why men come into their country and wreak havoc. I understand that the soldiers have to be there, but I feel sympathy for the Somalis who are being invaded...I sure wouldn't want foreign people coming to my street and blowing up my neighbors.

I agree with Jarom. It gets annoying listening to the same person telling a story. It gets more interesting when you get to listen to, two or even three different points of view of one story.

Jesse Meixner said...

I believe that showing the different sides of each culture is beneficial to the readers. This way we don't focus on one side being the heros. It shows us that there are heros and terrible losses on both sides.

Adam Wasniewski said...

I think how the author switches from different point of views is good. Its shows us how different people are and how they act differenty.

Ian VanMiddlesworth said...

I think that the multiple sides that are shown are very useful in showing actually how much some of the Somalians hated those Rangers how even though they understood that they were trying to come in there to do good, they still hate all the destruction and chaos that they bring to their towns.

stevie deats said...

Because the book shows the reader different points of view through the eyes of both the Americans and the Somalis, the reader has the opportunity to see the war from both sides. This allows the reader to look into the lives of both countries and keep from a biased point of view. I agree with laurie that the several points of view allow the reader to see where each country is coming from. For example, from the American point of view, it looks like they are attacking Somalia to save the people. From the Somalis point of view it looks like the Americans are attacking for no reason.

Tanner Mitchell said...

I think that it confuses me more than anything. I have a hard enough time learning all these sargents and colonels names and when it switches around from character to character i get totally lost.

peden said...

the difference in characters gives the reader a more indept reading. it lets us see what is going on on both sides not just one. i like the way he writes

sage said...

yea...I think its good that it shows both views of whats going on. I say that because the americans are thinking their helping the somali's when the somali's think they are getting attacked by the americans for no reason. uhh!! thats an A+ for sure!!!!!

Sarah Stanion said...

It is very interesting the way the author uses the different points of views. It lets the reader see what the character sees instead of just one side of the story you get both. It makes the story more interesting to read; it makes it more dramatic.

Tiffany Hellervik said...

I like having the different points of view because you don't just get a one-sided opinion. But, it does make things confusing.

When an author presents a story from multiple perspectives, such as in the book Black Hawk Down with the Somalians and U.S. soldiers, the reader can gain a much better understanding of the conflicts that are arising between the different parties. The separate eyes melding together to form one collective tale most certainly adds to the appeal of the novel, and may leave readers more intrigued than they would otherwise be without the duel narrative.

rikki leigh said...

having different perspectives of the war helps you to not be biast for one side or the other.

I really like all the military terms in the novel, and the fact that the author "decodes" all the abbreviations, making it easier for the reader to understand.

I think that it is good seeing the diffrent point of views that way you get to see each side of the story. it's good to have this in this kind of book because you get to see the reasoning and actions and why they made these decions.

i think that the view that we see as americans is that we are protecting america and helping Somali at the same time. But i think that the view that the Somalis see is that we are attacking there country for no reason. I also think that the point of views are a great perspective on how we can relate the emotions that are going on through out the book

steven bradshaw said...

I like that the book gives both sides of the battle because it shows how they faught the battle and how they looked at it as well. What I think you get to learn how the somolies wanted to fight us just to say pretty much that they killed an american. Witch go's along with the americans the just wanted to see combat and kill someone, but not all though. The somalies that are not part of the warlords coalition find it as an invasion and some of those people already have a hatred towards america. The warlords coalition finds it as an attack or a perfect time to do a counter attack(witch we we're not ready for). The americans find it a perfect oprotunity to takethe warlords top two Lieutenants. So this makes it slightly easier to put the warlord out of commission. Enable to help the somalian people.

♥stephanie_poletti♥ said...

well the whole 2 sides to everything jsut means u have to be very openminded and idealistic..If Somalians saw in our our what we were trying to do it would be good, but from ther point of view we are invadeing and my opinion on that is we are...

Sione Saenz said...

Being able to view the story from the somalis point of view makes me understand the the situation alot more. I understand what the somalies are going through. I think it's really smart to add the somalis side of the information. Knowing two sides of the story makes it easier to analize who the good guy and who's the bad guy.

Anonymous said...

I think looking at both points of view is interesting. It helps the reader understand were the Somalis/Americans are coming from.It show what both enemies are planning for the battle. In this story it shows that the Somali's are the bad guys because they are shooting our peole, but Americans are attacking their country, they are just protecting themselves.

kevin ferris said...

I think that by giving different point of views is very good. Because the way the Somalian soldiers get prepared, and the way they fight are way different than the Americans. It shows the reader that in war, the people in it don't all do the same thing. It also shows different point of views from an American soldier to a different American soldier. That shows how the more experienced soldiers react to the problems that happen in war better than the new soldiers.

John said...

We get to see the different points of view and that helps us know exactly what is going on and why people made those certain decisions.

nickcortez said...

It’s great how the author decides to make it not just from the Americans perspective, he switches it up and makes it to see out of the eyes of the Somali people. Cause it shows how we look from there eyes not just on how we view them.

Nathon Pfaff said...

I really like the two diferent points of view. It throughs a whole new look on what is going on. you really get to see what things look like through the eyes of the enemy.
